Eric Ambler (Londres, 1909 - 1998) fue uno de los más prolíficos autores de novela de espionaje y de guiones cinematográficos de su tiempo. Siendo ingeniero de formación, pronto se decanta por el mundo de la publicidad y por su afición a la literatura, que practica con éxito hasta la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Durante el conflicto armado, Ambler se enrola en el Ejército británico, donde ejerce de cineasta y guionista de propaganda militar. En 1945, se instala en Hollywood e inicia una prometedora carrera como guionista de cine, aunque al comienzo de la década de los cincuenta regresa a la novela. En 1958, además, deja los Estados Unidos para volver definitivamente a Europa. Sus obras más aclamadas son de su primera época: “The Dark Frontier” (Fronteras sombrías) (1936), Epitafio para un espía (1938), Motivo de alarma (1938), La máscara de Dimitrios (1939) y Viaje al miedo (1940), entre otras. Es también el autor del guión para la película Rebelión a bordo (1962), dirigida por Lewis Milestone y protagonizada por Marlon Brando.
