A Christmas Carol” es un cuento navideño, el primero de los que sobre este tema escribió Charles Dickens (1812-1870). Narra cómo el protagonista, un hombre avaro, frío y sin corazón, recibe la víspera de Navidad la visita del fantasma de su fallecido socio, quien le advierte que se le van a aparecer tres espíritus y, después de escucharlos, tendrá la oportunidad de reparar su vida mal empleada.

Dickens luce aquí su habilidad narrativa y fina intuición, puestas al servicio de una conclusión moralizante: la necesidad del amor entre los hombres y, concretamente, de un corazón compasivo ante la cruel situación de los pobres de su tiempo. La obra se inserta en el realismo propio de la época, si bien presenta algunos rasgos fantásticos románticos. Los fantasmas o espíritus de la Navidad son, en realidad, una personificación de la propia conciencia del protagonista, que acaba recuperando la esperanza y, con ella, el buen corazón y la alegría de vivir. El estilo de Dickens encierra valores apreciables que hacen agradable su lectura.
